I beg you not to do that.
You know, I've been on this list quietly for some time.. watching and
reading every mail I could so I can learn. I didn't miss a single "MY
MPLAYER DOESN'T WORK - WHAT DO I DO?" mail. My first mail to this list,
when I joined it, was somewhat lame too - about 'why' mplayer didn't
save the audio when using -vo divx. Yes, it was lame. I apologized, I
hadn't understand the docs quite well.
That takes me to the point: why are there so many users asking so many
stupid questions?
I think the docs are well written. For a technician or advanced
programmer, that is. But not for a common 'luser' (if you see that way).
Well, the best things in open source are getting help from other
people. So, I think it's time for us to assign a task that could
alleviate you and the other developers from responding such lame posts:
redesign and rewrite mplayer's documentation, in a manner that it gets
'readable' by such a non-technical person.
What do you think? I would also like to know the opinion of other
'beholders' here on this list.
I propose a docbook/SGML-based documentation, so it can be easily
searched for content and easily converted to common formats such as
HTML, .PDF or even Microsoft's .DOC.
By the way, I am also a C/C++ Programmer, but I don't know much of this
video and codecs field. I would love to collaborate with code too if I
knew the theory =) And I can't help being amazed in how much you have
made in so little time.
Last but not least: Yes, sometimes I am forced to support non-technical
people too, and I can understand your rage against these kind of people.
Anyway, I think you could be a bit less harsh on your sayings. Just a
thought, not meant to offend.
Best regards from Brazil,
