it's X11 driver problem, not mplayer or avifile.
Afair you have 3dfx card, it's known (and written in mplayer docs,
but you of course didn't RTFM, we don't even expect it... we just did
it to spent our time with some useless thing...) bug of 4.1.0 tdfx driver.
