You are probably better off just trying the latest RedHat GCC version.
gcc-2.96-85 works well for me. The GCC shipped in RedHat 7.0 was
broken, and but it has the version number 2.96 just like the version
in RedHat 7.1. It is therefore hard for the configure script to know
if you have the broken or the working version. This is made even
harder by Mandrake and others having their own broken and working
versions of GCC 2.96...
