as far as i remember, egcs was a separate compiler (can't tell whether
it was a gcc modification or a completely new compiler), which at some
point got approved as the official gnu compiler, replacing the then-gcc,
and thus in later versions named 'gcc' and not 'egcs'. so it seems
gcc 2.95.3 is egcs too, in terms of inheritance :)
