I'm not sure if this will help you, treat it as hint. 

When i first ran mplayer with subtitles, some accent characters were displayed
as '_'. The problem was in encoding, sub files was in Win CP1250 or sth like 
that. I solved it with utility recode (recode cp1250..l2 <filename>)
