Short explanation:
DVD subs are completely different from sub files. mplayer
has atm only subfile support.

Long explanation:
With subfiles text is rendered into the image, a simple but
usable aproach.
DVD subs are stored as images. This means you can support
any Characterset (and do even noncharacter things like in 
blair witch project). But this needs proper IFO (the file
that stores all information about the mpeg stream) parsing
and a better designed video output module (and of corse
some other "minor" things). The IFO parsing should be
ok now for about 2 or 3 weeks, the new VO system is still
under development. So you have to be patient.
If you want it now try vlc or ogle (but they wont be faster :-)
