Okay, thanks for the response. However, it is the documentation that has 
suggested that this is the way to go. 

The br=xxxx option is not very clearly described and the movie rescaling 
description suggests that you rescale to get a smaller file size using the 
 -x and -y options. That, as I said before, gives me exactly the same file 
size, no matter what I set them too. 

Using the divx4opts bit rate option, I have tried several settings from 1300 
to 100 and I still get the identical file size. 

Is there actually some set of options that can be used in mencoder to reduce 
the size of an avi file?
