Hmm... I get that problem too.. sometimes... don't know why.. usually 
sometime near the first few movies i play with mplayer... this is not 
just exclusive to mplayer.. I have encountered this with other player 
too...It seem to be almost random.

But if I change video output ie -vo gl2 and let it run for a few seconds 
and then go back to my standard video output (xv) it cleans that problem 
right up. No clue why. Perhaps GL2 mode clears or refreshes some part of 
the video card that is sometimes missed by the xv output?
