Sounds reasonable, but could you please explain in a little more detail what
advantage this would bring?

This is the wrong list for the patch.  Please read DOCS/tech/patches.txt and
resend this to the mplayer-dev-eng mailing list, where all the developers
are listening and will be able to comment on and check in your patch.
