I was previously using 0.90pre4 with no real difficulty, assides from the
occasional freeze when using mencoder on a notably scratched dvd, which I
could as easily blame on the kernel driver, as I was getting IDE errors in
the system log.

...anyway.
I just upgraded to 0.90pre6, only to be dissapointed to find that it no
longer seems to work with xvid. It produces ENORMOUS files when I try to
backup a dvd. On order of about 80 megabytes for every second of
material [which also fails when I try to play it].

Note that this is -not- an error with mplayer. mplayer still works
perfectly at decoding all the material I throw at it. This issue is only
reserved for mencoder

When I try a two pass encode, the divx2pass.log looks like this:

##version 1
quality 5
Frame 0: intra 11, quant -1073749440, texture -1073749584, motion 1107463989, total 134659488
Frame 1: intra 11, quant -1073749440, texture -1073749584, motion 1107463989, total 134659488
Frame 2: intra 11, quant -1073749440, texture -1073749584, motion 1107463989, total 134659488
Frame 3: intra 11, quant -1073749440, texture -1073749584, motion 1107463989, total 134659488
.
.
.

it goes on like that, the same values for every frame, on and on. This I
was able to let run for a bit, because it wasn't trying to dump around 5
gigabytes a minute to my drive when running.

Is xvid still supported? It's faster and I prefer the quality, and I
especially prefer having the source, so that I know I will always be able
to decode my media on future hardware. If divx5-binary went away, all my
old compressions could be useless on a future platform. Open source codecs
discourage bitrot as far as archiving, in my opinion. I once stored a lot
of personal pictures in a propriatary format under windows. Completely unreadable
to me now. I hope to avoid that in the future.

...sorry to ramble on, but I truly do hope you guys will continue to
support xvid and not only divx5-binary.
