I do not understand well - what is mplayer-dev (sorry).
I thouht it is some directory al ftp.mplayerhq or adress at http page - bad.
So what I did:
1) MPlayer-20020814 - cvs version.
2) I applied your tv.patch signed 12 08 2002.
3) Basing at your tvi_v4l.patch I replaced parts of code by hand.
This message contents tarball with: originall tvi_v4l.c of mplayer, rejected 
changes from your patch, and chnges which I made by hand (as tvi_v4lwk.diff).
You can verify what I did bad.

Plese explain me what mplayer-dev means, if it is important for the metter.

Results:

1) Color space is still choosen as you expect. - There is no need to force it 
now.
2) Sound sync works good.

3) Stereo mode looks strange:
a) when I run mencoder with tv first it reports AUDIO chans=1
when I start it again it reports AUDIO chans=2.
I tried too load tv module first running xawtv or with modprobe.
No differents.
But in the file recorded it still leaves mono. For chans=2 too.

-oac mp3lame or pcm does not change anything

Last thing is other:
When I compile mplayer with your tv.patch and alsa9 support.
Tv input does not work with oss sound - only with alsa.
With oss driver it crash mplayer/mencode wit signal 11.

It is a pity I do not know C.
I can not be sure of my improvisation with tvi_v4l.diff.
