[MPlayer-users] mplayer fine, gmplayer borks sometimes

I've got a situation where mplayer works fine from
the command line, but gmplayer plays slow or shows a gray output window
and eventually gives me a warning that its playing too
slow and gives hints. The hints don't help.

Strangly this only happens for some mpegs, other mpegs, avi's,
rm's are fine.

I've tried various -vo options and with -ao null.

I previously had mplayer-0.90-4 installed and it did not
exhibit this problem.
I suspect that some conf file didn't get upgraded correctly
but it's not clear what that is.
I'd appreciate any ideas you might have.
TIA

Configuration:
PIII 1.13Ghz w 256MB ram
Debian Sarge (upgraded from Debian Woody)
kernel 2.4.19
xfree 4.2.1
Matrox G450 with 16MB sdram
Source mpeg is on a uw scsi disk.
mplayer-0.90pre10 built from source using debian/rules binary,
upgraded over previous mplayer version built the same way.

Here's text output from mplayer -ao null -vo xmga:

**** Your system is too SLOW to play this! ****
         ************************************************
!!! Possible reasons, problems, workarounds:
- Most common: broken/buggy _audio_ driver. Workaround: Try -ao sdl or
use
ALSA 0.5 or OSS emulation of ALSA 0.9. Read DOCS/sound.html for more
tips!
You can also experiment with -autosync 30 or other values.
- Slow video output. Try a different -vo driver (for list: -vo help) or
try
with -framedrop! Read DOCS/video.html for video tuning/speedup tips.
- Slow CPU. Don't try to play a big DVD/divx on a slow CPU! Try
-hardframedrop.
- Broken file. Try various combinations of these: -nobps -ni -mc 0
-forceidx
- For playback from slow media (nfs/smb mounts, dvd, vcd etc) try -cache
8192
- Are you using -cache to play a non-interleaved AVI file? Try with
-nocache.
If none of these apply, read DOCS/bugreports.html!
