perhaps you could try the preemptive kernel patch 
(http://www.tech9.net/rml/linux/), to reduce the latency/response time of 
your system. This is, in general, supposed to help multimedia performance. It 
worked  for me when playing DVDs with mplayer. (better audio synch + smoothed 
playback a bit)
