Make sure "magic sysrequest key" is compiled into the kernel and it's
being turned on at boot time. Then, to unlock the keyboard hold SysRq
(i.e. ALT+PRINT SCREEN) and press R. This bypasses the keyboard driver,
unless the CPU itself is frozen dead (very rare) it should always work.
There are a couple of other useful combinations with SysRq - it's best
to print them out and hand on the wall as usually, when you need them,
there's no way to find out which is which unless you have a second
computer to use for looking it up.

(I'm not sure if this feature is available on non-x86 systems or which
key it would use there.)
