Try using SDL, it seems to work the best for me when using VNC. You may need to give a '-display :1' option to mplayer if you already have an X display running on that machine. It still will be slow, and if you're trying to play the file on a higher-end machine than your VNCclient (redundant?), it will be even slower since the PC will use some (maybe not a large) portion of CPU time on network connection as well. Have you even TRIED to play the file on your 486? MPlayer can run even on it, try it, you'll be amazed...
Also, IMHO, you should use TightVNC if you aren't already, it has much cleaner screen refresh for me.
