There were a couple good threads on this recently. Search the mailing
list archives for "encoding quality advices" and "insane compulsive
maniacal mencoder settings" (I think I got those titles right). Also
look through some of the files in DOCS/tech.

If your computer is fast enough to encode in realtime, then that might
be your best bet. If it isn't, or you want to use 2/3 pass encoding
(usually a good idea), then you might want to first use a really low
compression like you said. I can't give you any direct advice on this,
but try experimenting with mpeg2 and mpeg4 at high bitrates to find a
something that works well with your system and has high quality.

Has anyone had issues w/ scale ?

No... but this depends on what parameters you're using. Post the
_entire_ output of one of those crashes you mention.
