it newer worked with "-ao alsa9 -channels 6".
you always had to use "-ao alsa9:surround51"

what does it mean that don't work..give a better description of the
error
i have a mandrake-2.4.20-kernel, and it works.
simply "mplayer -ao oss -channels 6 my.avi"
did you try with the default drivers from the kernel? do they work?
