I had the same problem with s3 virge xv driver ;) Well, maybe not
exactly the same, only mplayer crashes, not X, just after switching into
low-res video mode. It exists since pre8 or pre7. In my case, there were
two solutions: first is to set vm=off and press 'f' after movie starts -
always works, second is to run mplayer second time while working in this
video mode, so it won't switch it again - this may fail too, but it
works in ~50% cases ;) In two or three tries mplayer finally starts
playing.

Quite mysterious, i think ;) But not really important... xv output is
too slow on this system anyway ;)
