Nah, same here. Using Gnome2, tried metacity and sawfish2, both the same.
while new windows of other apps appear in upper left corner, mplayer snaps
back to center on change. usually it refuses to play sound then, too, btw.

Maybe mplayer knows more codecs, but xine sure scres higher on usability.
