Check the section on the RTC in the docs ( http://www.mplayerhq.hu/DOCS/#rtc ) 
specifically the bit that says:

echo 1024 > /proc/sys/dev/rtc/max-user-freq

This lets a non-root user use the RTC with MPlayer by increasing the max 
frequency of interrupts that it can be programmed to generate.
