[MPlayer-users] Performances

Can some people tell me what best performance do they have with telling
what processor, amount of ram, vo driver , video codec for mplayer and
mencoder ?
I have a PIII 800Mhz with 392 Mo and Matrox G400. I use xv ( encountering 
problem with xmga driver . but gonna recompie the whole stuff before
reporting anything here ) and have quite good performance for playing,
but encoding is between 5 to 10 frame, which I think is slow ( I have a
friend wich codes dvdx, one of the best ripper for windows and he have
on a less powerfull machine 16 frame/sec ).
Maybe a DVD reader issue , or kernel , or ide driver.
( With setting readahead to a big value I have about 9 - 10 frame/sec,
but it stops every minute for lets say 15 sec )
And a last question : Does mencoder to asynchronous reading ?
