Hmmm... Sorry, I've just read your 2nd mail...

Are you sure it's a valid vobsub ?
Have you tested with other avi/vobsubs on your configuration ?

If it worked you should see sth like (with -v):

Playing ....avi
vobsub: ignoring size: 720x480
vobsub: ignoring org: 0, 0
vobsub: ignoring scale: 100%
vobsub: ignoring alpha: 100%
vobsub: ignoring smooth: ON
vobsub: ignoring fadein/out: 50, 50
vobsub: ignoring align: OFF at LEFT TOP
vobsub: ignoring time offset: 0
vobsub: ignoring custom colors: OFF, tridx: 1000, colors: ebe9ea,
ded481, 110f10, d2d0d1
vobsub: ignoring langidx: 0
[vobsub] subtitle (vobsubid): 0 language en
[vobsub] subtitle (vobsubid): 1 language en
[vobsub] subtitle (vobsubid): 2 language en

*** free_stream() called ***
...

Maybe upload a small part of the avi + the vobsub's to mplayer ftp.
