[MPlayer-users] external audio file and -ni performance

Hy,
I have a video file with vobsub subtitles and external mp3 audio track.
I understand that MPlayer can't exchange external tracks against an
interleaved audio track easily.
But there is still the -ni option which reads the file on two
possitions. Beside this option being very slow (shouldn't there be an
extra switch which enables buffered ni read or gives a buffer size?) why
couldn't this extra read for the audio data just be done in an external
file?
And what do You use to play files with an external original soundtrack?
Thanks for the thoughts,
Alexander Werth
