Hmm, you installed RPMs for another distribution into your RH? This
could be the source of your problems.
SuSE uses RPM too, but their packages mostly don't fit in any other
distribution.
So, you better go ahead, remove the faulty gcc-3.0 package and build
your own gcc, installed in /usr/local.
You can then select this gcc by typing:
CC=/usr/local/bin/gcc-3.0 ./configure
which causes configure to use your new gcc rather than the old one.
