Well, then you could use mplayer, because you skip the encoder part of
mencoder completely, leaving only the 'm' ;)

But AFAIR mplayer cannot output a raw stream.

Try transcode, the new 0.6.0pre2 adds another mpeg2 encoder than the one
from bbmpeg, so you should be able to produce (S)VCDs with that.
