In the US, many record executives would balk at people recording cassettes
of their LPs to play in their cars -- they expected the record owners
to buy cassette versions of the albums they already owned. 

If CDs were like software, one would be expected to buy a separate CD for
their home player, their car player, their walkabout player, etc. :(

Data CD's are very inexpensive, but here also in the US if you buy
blank CD (Maxell, etc.) intended for "audio" use you pay a premium.
