Try using CVS version.  It handles those better.
i.e.: mplayer http://media.somewhere.com/movie.wmv
or mplayer mms://media.somewhere.com/movie.wmv
depending on the URL of the film.  If that doesn't work, find asfrecord2, it can 'download' the stream to a file, then mplayer can play it for you.  You can even pipe the output from asfrecord2 into mplayer:
asfrecord2 mms://media.somewhere.com/movie.wmv | mplayer <your options> -

(Syntax may be incorrect, RTFineM for correct usage.)
