So i will give my thoughts on encoding speeds ....
I have a athlon 800 and ripped a lot before under win.
1.) You have to try to stay in one colorspace, since converting colorspace
costs cpu power.
2.) you have to crop the black bars, because your video become totaly ugly
because you waste a lot of bandwidth for the black bars and the black bars
costs cpu power
3.) the codec you use : in the list here very often was said that libavcodec
is the fastest so this thing is right
4.) if you try to get long films on one CD you have to reduce the resolution,
because the smaller resolution needs less bandwith for the same quality ->
better quality with the same bandwitdth. Scaling while you playing the video,
doesn't harm the quality so much , than the to low bandwidth for a to high
resolution.
I get between nearby 25 fps using libavcodec + resolution e.g. 640x288
I tried transcode / DVD::Rip a time ago and was was confused by 85 fps but in
time he ripped the video without trancoding ( mencoder with ovc copy get it
near 190fps) , and began to read something nearby 8-9 fps during transcoding,
so I erased it from my partition and gave mencoder a try and I am absolutly
happy. happy. The best of mencoder is to transcode the video directly from
DVD without copy it to the HD so I dont need so much space like before.
