Let me expose a point of view :

- For the video PLAYER part, what makes the life
of a project like Mplayer ? What kind of users use a
product like a video player ? 

Mostly are users - not only Linux -  but COMPUTER
newbies.

I know that research in the doc give 95 % answers -
but in order to completely understand it, you must
have a minimal knowledge about video Codecs.
Example :
A user has a .avi in libavcodec format and writes that
t doesn't function.
the actual process of downloading another library by
hand is not easy to understand - and not only
downloading library and install it-,since you must
copy a part of the libary into Mplayer otherwise it
doesn't compile.

The userhead way is (and I think the _normal_ way):
- get the message it doesn't function.
- install libavcodec library.
- recompile mplayer in order to take the fact the new
library has been installed.
