thy design philosophy of mplayer is i bit more console oriented than of xine's ( xine.sourceforge.net )...
so for you questions:
1. win32codecs... it's a too big download ( several mega ).. and you get it once , but you download mplayer snapshots a lot of times
2. gui not default.... as i said this is more about the console... they are working on the gui too, it's just not a priority by now
but if you want easier installation, then try:
1. for redhat: the rpm packages... follow the link on the mplayer-download page..
2. for mandrake: plf.zarb.org.... you find every rpm you need
3. for other distribs: i don't know
