if something does not work, then there is a bug somewhere. always.
perfect programs with no bugs always work.

the bug is may be in mplayer, in your vga/sound drivers, kernel or in your
mind (misunderstanding options, not rtfming etc)

we can't help unless we see what you exactly did on what hardware what
drivers etc...

i can't say more than htdig: RTFM
it has the answers to your problem.
