I have a Matsushita drive, and it is as as flaky as my Grand Mama's apple
pie... Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesnt.  Sometimes, putting a
different disc in the drive and reading a small portion will make it work
again for the disc that was giving me trouble. etc. etc..

It doesn't have to be just a particular brand however,,,, DVD drives have
traditionally been touch and go tech. I'm sure there's a wide range of
poassible problems with each individual unit.  The old rules of computer
service apply, if your having trouble with 1 unit, try another!

I have been greatly impressed with libdvdread's ability to recover from
read errors in the middle of the disc, often skipping a 5 second segment
and resuming from there,, nifty :)

Maybe this specific model then. 3 people already have problems with it.
Maybe a combination of this drive and a chipset, however, we had different
chipsets.

I tried different kernels in 2.4 series - up to 2.4.16... No, don"t think
it's the kernel.
