Great guide. I'm going to try mencoder/lavc for the first time soon.

One question - is it currently possible to produce and Ogg instead of an
AVI and/or encode to Ogg Vorbis instead of MP3? AFAIK there are no Ogg
muxer tools for Linux yet, so if it is, it would have to be supported by
mplayer.
