With 1.46 I don't even see a window appearing.

Interesting. Now we know Nick doesn't have a Rage128 card. With my Rage 
128 RF AGP:

1.46 &  1.45 : no window appears
1.44 .. 1.37 : pink window
1.36 and previous : works

Well... that's a nice thing in case some of the oficial mplayer 
developers wants to do something about this problem. But... it doesn't 
seem so. And this output means nothing to me, since I started looking at 
mplayer's code yesterday and I don't know it yet.

I'll keep trying anyway.
