just because this is wrong. most drivers dont support this.
(infact there are just a few who do, like emu10k)

nope, they both grant a way of using a non blocking way using sound output,
but you have to use their way of doing it. at least from esd i know
that it supports a way for programms still doing direct "connection"
to the soundriver (ie esddsp). but this adds additional lag to
the soundpath that is not easy do calculate -> sound gets jerky
(ie there is a reason why mplayer direclty opens /dev/dsp)
