I have rebuilt from this afternoons CVS and I have noticed a
difference in pausing behavior with and without the gui along the
lines that Dan said.  When the gui is on then <spacebar> does not
unpause, reliably, and various combos of 'f' and <spacebar> will end
me up with funny borders (though I have not observed anything I'd call
'distortion', just extra space).

Sometimes 'f' and <spacebar> don't even seem to work with the gui
enabled and I need to get them to happen by a pulldown menu.

With no gui, I have noticed that pause seems to function a bit
differently.  I think it used to be that when I paused, things froze
exactly still and resumed right at the point.  Now it seems that for a
moment everything moves quickly (sound and motion) before it resumes
again at normal speed.  Reminds me more of my VCR.
