[MPlayer-users] mencoder often COMPLETLY locks up my machine

did you try things like:
(esp. since you can telnet into the box)
-> boot laptop w/o X
-> make sure you have all messages to syslog
   e.g. my syslog looks liek this:
# /etc/syslog.conf - Configuration file for syslogd(8)
#
# For info about the format of this file, see "man syslog.conf".
#
#
#
# print most on tty10 and on the xconsole pipe
#
kern.warn;*.err;authpriv.none    /dev/tty10
kern.warn;*.err;authpriv.none   |/dev/xconsole
*.*                             -/var/log/allmessages

(on another box have 3 (or more) xterms open, all visible
-> telnet in and run top
-> telnet in and run tail -f /var/log/allmessages
-> telnet in again and run truss mencoder

Use a relatively stable kernel
(I have very good experiences with the suse 2.4.16 kernel on a large
machine base (pIII, p4, AMD, mobile p3, mobile p4)

What are the hardware/software specs ?
