As I know, the best performace to use MPlayer is with
svgalib. Of course svgalib has to support your video
card (or chipset). Look for details at www.svgalib.org

I can watch divx on my older machine, that is:
AMD K6-2 350 MHz
Asus V3000 graph card (riva 128)

It is true, that I have to watch some movies in
8 bit/pixel (or 16 bit/pixel with -framedrop),
but it is quite good and full screen!

And svgalib don't needs X!
So the problem can be only if your graph card is
not supported by svgalib...
