Yes, this severely hurts MPlayer's functionality. I have to keep using
AVIdemux for this over and over again, and I'm sick of it. I don't want to
use GUI crap all the time, I'd much rather script this up using Mencoder.

Yes, I had the same problem yesterday, and starting VMWare and using
VirtualDub suxx...
I'd like such a function, too...
I even thought of the craziest idea how to do it with mencoder anyway... but
it didn't work:
I tried "mplayer -audiodump" to dump the (AC3) audio track, then "mencoder
-ss
0.4 -oac copy -ovc copy" to get rid of the 0.4 seconds too much, and then
copying back the dumped audio stream, but neither mplayer nor mencoder did
recognize the dumped audio stream as an audio stream :( Guess that doesn't
work with AC3....
