[MPlayer-users] chopping up avi's

can mencoder be used to chop up avi's?

this:
mencoder big.avi -oac copy -ovc copy -endpos 650mb -o part1.avi

should work for getting the first chunk, but then after that, is there any way 
to seek directly to 650mb for the beginning of the next chunk?  I saw -ss, 
but if the video and audio codecs are variable bitrate, it would be 
impossible to calculate how many seconds equal the 650mb mark.  I also tried 
-sb, but that didn't work.

or, are there any other command line tools out there for splitting up avi 
files into chunks of a certain size?
