On the off chance that it really was the compiler, I re-built
gcc 3.2 from the current Mandrake Cooker .src.rpm.
I have not analysed the differences between the cooker version,
gcc-3.2-4mdk.src.rpm, and the Mdk 9.0 stock version, gcc-3.2-1mdk.src.rpm.
But there is one difference which is (possibly) relevant to my
situation: the new compiler was compiled (using the old one of course)
with "-march=athlon-mp" and/or with knowledge that the target machine
was an athlon-mp whereas the stock one was compiled (I believe)
with "-march=i586".
At all events, the freshly built compiler correctly builds Mplayer
without the GENERAL_REGS errors I kept getting with the old compiler.
Thanks to all who helped. Perhaps the "powers-at-large" will
put this little fact in the docs to save some other poor soul
hours of wasted time.

P.S. And thanks to whoever it was (sorry, I forget) who
suggested that the compiler was buggy. I'm not sure you
are correct but you (eventually) prompted me to rebuild
the compiler nonetheless.
