yeah that works, i did assume that that would relate to the recording 
volume. But surely there should be a way to set the recording level 
inside the program, it seems bizarre to have to turn the volume down 
physically when this is not required for any other sort of encoding 
(obviosuly it's a different scenario but still...)

There's also no apparent way to set the volume of the audio input. i can 
set the volume that lame encodes at, but it's already clipping before it 
gets to lame.
