If it has, you will see the text console output (with all boot-time
messages)
on the tv as well as on your monitor (this independently of mplayer of
course).

If you have a DOS bootable disk you will see the DOS text messages when you
boot from this disk.

In other words, with -vo vesa  mplayer (or any other software) _does not
know_
that there is (possibly) a tv connected on the tv-out.
