[MPlayer-users] Encoding in 16bits ?

I succeded to encode avi files for the Zaurus PDA, using 304 pixel width 
pictures and libavcodec. The result is fantastic.
However, since a PDA screen can display only 65000 colours (16 bits), is 
it possible to encode a movie in 16bits colour depth, in order to 
increase the quality for the same bitrate ?
I already looked in the man pages and docs, but did not find any 
options. Is there a possibility to do it ?
