[MPlayer-users] mencoder output png?

Here is what I want to try to do.
take a video file (avi, mpeg, whatever) and output it as animated gif 
thumbnail.
I know that animated gif isn't one of the supported formats, but as far as I 
can determine mpng ( a format similar to animated gifs??? ) is a supported 
format.

I can find examples of encoding mpng files from multiple image files 
(jpg,png).  Is it even possible to create a mpng from a video file?
