Check to see if dma is enabled for your DVD drive. Should be like this:

bugfood:~# hdparm -d /dev/hdb

/dev/hdb:
  using_dma    =  1 (on)


If it isn't enabled, turn it on with hdparm -d1 /dev/hd-whatever.
Also, for your system, -vo xv _should_ be optimal, as far as I know.
