Uhm, did you get your examples switched? The first one you show is
CVS-020801, and the second is 0.90pre8. Unless I'm reading the version
string wrong, the CVS example is way old, so I'll disregard that and
focus on the pre-8.

Solution 1 (better):
Use -vo xv. As far as I know, the TNT2 has xv support, so you might be
able to get that working. Type xvinfo and see what that says.

Solution 2 (quick):
Continue using -vo x11. x11 doesn't have hardware scaling, so you have
to either enable software scaling with -zoom (this is slooow) or change
the vidmode with -vm.
