That's not true.
Xv for example _does_ work over the network.
And if your network is fast enough you can play movies with small
(100MBit) or even full (1GBit) resolution over the network...
This may be desirable if the target machine is an X-Client that can
_display_ the video fast enough, but is not powerfull enough to decode
divx or mpeg in realtime. E.g. my P133 notebook is too slow for
decoding, but can display small videos over the network just fine
(100Mbit, X server supports Xvideo).
