[MPlayer-users] mplayer WAV dumping is horribly slow

Hi.

Since a lot of versions mplayer's -ao pcm is really slow. Comparing
mplayer and mencoder yields the following:

time mplayer -ao pcm -aofile audio.wav -vo null -vc null \
  firefly.(1x04).jaynestown.nbs.sharereactor.mpg
real 7m42.133s
user 0m0.470s
sys 0m0.100s

time mencoder -ovc frameno -oac pcm -o frameno.avi \
  firefly.(1x04).jaynestown.nbs.sharereactor.mpg
real 1m37.058s
user 0m37.750s
sys 0m11.980s

During the mplayer run the CPU is rather idle, ranging between 15 and
30%. The load average approaches 0.4, not more.

Is there a faster way to dump audio from a movie to a WAV file? Why is
mplayer so slow compared to mencoder? Both are pre9.
