hi,
with oss-drivers it worked like:
'mplayer -ao oss -channels 4 newtrain.avi'
but i wanted to use alsa9...
so i tried:
'mplayer -ao alsa9 -channels 4 newtrain.avi'
.. no success....
after some time i tried xine... in his config-window i could set a
checkbox for 4-speaker mode...
after that, it worked!!... so i've begun to watch his log-messages and
they told that they use the surround40 alsa device ..
so i tried:
'mplayer -ao alsa9:surround40 -channels 4 newtrain.avi' and it worked
:-))))
after that i became very clever :-) and did a 'locate surround40',
which revealed, that:
in /usr/share/alsa/pcm there are files like surround40.conf,
surround51.conf ( tried it, works with -channels 6), etc...
so when you use -ao alsa9 alsa uses the default device ( hw:0,0 ).
so if you want more, you have to specify the device using one of those
*.conf...
that's all...
maybe i was too stupid, but it was kind of hard to find this info...
(actually i also had to mute the sb-live-analog-output-jack in
alsamixer, but that can be a mandrake issue )
so maybe there could be some examples in the manpage by '-ao',
like:
"-ao alsa9:surround40 -channels 4 specifies 4speaker mode using alsa"
bye,
gabor

thing loves them. And after awhile you want to destroy whatever
that thing is, so it can't hurt you no more.
